The perfect combination: focus on sustainability and high efficiency technologies.

In addition to being home to the Spanish national government, Madrid is the top performer in Spain in terms of investment in technological infrastructure.

Not far from the capital city, a new TIER III type Hyperscale Data Center has been built. Right from the earliest design stages, the focus was on sustainability and installation of highly efficient technologies to reduce the values of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), an indicator used to measure the energy efficiency of Data Centers.

The brief was to maximise the management of temperature, humidity and air distribution based on outdoor atmospheric conditions, managing thermal loads in the most efficient way, while ensuring straightforward installation and start-up of a system designed with possible future expansion in mind, being able to also achieve full remote control.

Three technologies in one machine: this is why HiRef's DataBatic proved to be the winning choice.

Three technologies in one machine: this is why HiRef's DataBatic proved to be the winning choice.

16 HDB0204 units were installed in the Spanish Data Center for a total power of 2MW.

Each DataBatic unit uses three different operating modes: in cold climate conditions, the unit can operate exclusively by using indirect air Free-Cooling; as the external temperature increases, when Free-Cooling alone is no longer able to fully cover thermal load requirements, the unit uses the adiabatic cooling (Evaporative Cooling) system based on the air flow coming from the outside; when adiabatic cooling is no longer enough, a direct expansion mechanical system steps in to meet 100% of the load requirements (full back-up cooling).

The advantage? An extended working range even in more temperate climatic zones, with a highly positive impact on management costs.

In addition, to avoid any hot spots, the system has been equipped with HiNode, the HiRef software for integrated system control that maximises cooling effectiveness by ensuring even distribution throughout the area, by calculating the optimal setpoint and managing the machines so as to obtain maximum efficiency. Another critically important detail to guarantee the continuity of service in the Data Center: an integrated dual power supply with an automatic quick restart kit for emergency situations.

solution

Outstanding performance and shared design: a strong relationship behind success.

The value of this construction exceeds performance and technical considerations. The consulting relationship established between HiRef and the customer, based on mutual trust and advice, was the extra asset leading to a co-creation project, ever since the very first design phases all the way to the implementation of 4 FAT tests on 25% of the machines, from installation to testing, in order to be granted a Data Center certification.

Technology: Adiabatic with integrated Free-cooling, Evaporative cooling, Full back-up cooling

Management: HiRef Spa in collaboration with HG SOLUTIONS, HiRef branch for Spain

Units installed:

16 HiRef HDB0204 (DataBatic)

System power: 2 MW
