HiRef has designed a system suitable for the existing architectural constraints in the building

Palazzo Zabarella is one of the most prestigious historical buildings in the city of Padua; it hosts art and historical heritage exhibitions.

It welcomes many visitors during the year, an average of 150,000 in the average 4-month duration of each temporary exhibition.

If, on the one hand, it is nice to see so much love for culture, on the other hand this implies a risk of deterioration of the air quality with a negative impact on the conservation of the works of art.

Considering the heritage value of the building, there were engineering constraints when it came to system designing, and for this reason HiRef first of all carried out a survey on thermal loads, both sensible and latent.

The need for system redevelopment was immediately obvious in three main areas:

1) Revision of heat loads in consideration of turnout and guarantee of stability data

2) Integrated management of hygrometric requirements

3) Improved sustainability of production systems

Geothermal energy: new and eco-friendly

Geothermal energy: new and eco-friendly

The diagnosis suggested that the thermal energy source to be used should be the local aquifer.

Geothermal systems have a very low environmental impact and are extremely low noise: two highly appreciated characteristics for the structure located downtown Padua.

solution

The idea: a geothermal power plant that could use existing wells and software specifically created to always have everything under control

The heart of the air conditioning system is a geothermal power plant fed from a well which, following a recently completed technological redevelopment, draws up to 7 l/s of groundwater (15°) used for the operation of the chiller unit. Thanks to the special configurations of this system, it is possible to obtain a steady chilled water temperature in all conditions.
